Shoulder season: May–June and September
The best trade-off on the island: warm enough to swim comfortably, long daylight hours, and far fewer visitors than peak summer. Hotel and car rental prices are noticeably lower than July–August. This is also the best window for hiking Mount Kerkis and the trails around Manolates.
Peak season: July–August
Hot, dry and busy. The sea is at its warmest and ferries/flights run most frequently, but Pythagoreio and Kokkari fill up and prices peak. Book tours and accommodation well ahead if travelling in this window.
Spring and autumn: April, October
Mild and green in April, with wildflowers on the hiking trails but a still-cool sea. October keeps reasonable daytime warmth into the first half of the month, with a genuine off-season feel and lower prices.
Winter: November–March
Mild by northern European standards but genuinely quiet. Many hotels, tavernas and tour operators close for the season. Suits travellers who want the island to themselves rather than a beach holiday.
