Potami Waterfalls, Samos: Shaded Gorge Walk

A narrow, wooded gorge west of Karlovasi, where the stream locals call the Kastania river runs between boulders, plane trees and ferns into small natural pools. Most descriptions count two main falls; local guides describe up to three, depending on how far you go. The path is fully shaded, which makes it a good plan for a hot day. Entry is free.

What to see and do

1. 1The gorge walk: about 20 minutes of easy walking beside the stream, over small wooden bridges. The dry section ends at the first pool; from there you wade or swim for 5 to 10 minutes to the first fall.
2. 2The waterfalls: don't expect big drops: the tallest is about 5 m and the first is about 2 m. For the second, climb the steep wooden stairs, follow the path for about 400 m, then carry on in the stream.
3. 3Potami beach nearby: the trail starts where the road ends, at Potami beach, which has a café and a seafront restaurant. It is a natural swim stop after the walk, and in 2026 it is one of three Samos beaches awarded the Blue Flag, with Glykoriza and Doryssa/Potokaki.
4. 4History at the trailhead: at the start of the path stands the 11th-century Church of the Transfiguration, described as one of the oldest on the island, with the ruins of a castle on the hill above.

Practical tips for the Potami Waterfalls

Getting there by car. Go through Karlovasi and follow the coast road to Potami beach; navigation apps sometimes send drivers onto dirt mountain tracks. The area is about 5 km from central Karlovasi and 36 km by road from Vathy. Parking is at the beach car park at the end of the road. Do not park in the estuary or on its riverside plants: it is a protected wetland.

Without a car. Bus information is patchy and partly contradictory. An unofficial timetable site lists a short Karlovasi to Potami line, while a local guide mentions a municipal bus from Karlovasi in July and August only, so ask in Karlovasi before relying on it. On foot, a marked 2.8 km route links Karlovasi, Paleo Karlovasi and the Agios Antonios cave to Potami in about 1 hour 10 minutes.

What to wear and bring. Wear water shoes, sandals or trainers you don't mind soaking, and bring a towel and a waterproof bag for your phone. You won't need sun cream or a hat on the trail, as rocks and trees shade it completely. Carry a little cash for the taverna above the falls, reached by wooden stairs. Fires and camping are not allowed, and you take your rubbish home.

How long to allow. A short visit to the first pool and back takes about 40 minutes. The full visit can stretch to three hours: 20 minutes to walk in, around an hour to go up and back down past all the falls, and 20 minutes to walk out. Local guides rate the complete climb as fairly demanding, so turn back at the first fall if you have any doubt.

The taverna track. A second, drier approach exists. A dirt track leaves the main road opposite the Agios Nikolaos chapel and runs 1.3 km to the taverna above the falls. From its wooden stairs you get close to the second fall, though you don't see the drop itself. It suits anyone in the group who would rather not swim while the others go through the water.

When to go and when to stay away. The flow is strongest after winter rain and in spring. In summer it drops, but the cold pools stay popular, so come before 9 am or late in the day, and be back at your car at least an hour before sunset. Stay out of the gorge after heavy rain, if the water is fast or murky, if the walkways are damaged, or if you can't swim.

Longer walks from the same trailhead. The marked Potami, Waterfalls, Tsourlei and Potami loop covers 4 km in about 1 hour 30 minutes, with 284 m of climbing, and is graded 1 out of 5. Heading west instead, a 3.8 km path of about 1 hour 40 minutes, also graded 1 out of 5, leads to the wild beaches of Mikro and Megalo Seitani, which have no facilities at all.

If you carry on to Seitani. Mikro Seitani comes first, then Megalo Seitani, a 470 m beach of sand and pebbles where the sea is often rough and the water drops off quickly. It is part of a Natura 2000 area because the Mediterranean monk seal lives on this coast. Take good shoes, water and food, and carry everything back out.

A protected corner of the island. The stream, known locally as the Kastania river, was called Kerkitios in antiquity. Its estuary is listed in the inventory of Greek island wetlands, and the regional tourism office names the Potami wetlands among the island's birdwatching spots. Keep to the path and the wooden walkways, and leave the pools as clean as you found them for the next swimmers.
