Is Greece Expensive? A Real Budget From Samos

No, not uniformly. Greece spans five-star Santorini suites at several hundred euros a night and simple village rooms at a fraction of that. Samos sits firmly on the affordable end: it has no cruise-ship crowds, far fewer 5-star resorts than the Cyclades, and prices that reflect a real working island rather than a destination built for peak demand. A comfortable week here costs meaningfully less than the same week on Santorini or Mykonos.

Samos vs the pricier Greek islands

The main reason Samos is cheaper isn't lower quality, the beaches, food and history are on par with better-known islands, it's lower demand. Santorini and Mykonos built an international luxury market over decades; Samos never did, so hotels, tavernas and tours are priced for a mixed local and European charter market rather than for jet-setters. What has changed in Greek prices

Two changes matter more for a visitor than any headline figure. The first is a new line on your accommodation bill: since 2024 a per-night Climate Resilience Fee applies to hotel stays and short-term rentals across Greece, replacing the old stay tax, and its rates were updated from 1 January 2025. The amount depends on the category of the property and the season, and whether it is charged per room or per person varies, so ask your accommodation for the exact figure before you pay. Listed heritage buildings, youth hostels and campsites are exempt.

The second is general price inflation, which hit food, energy and eating out across Europe in recent years. The official measure for Greece is the consumer price index published every month by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). We do not quote a single percentage on this page, because a yearly national rate says little about the price of a taverna meal in Kokkari next summer, and because the figure changes with each release: check the latest ELSTAT index if you want the current rate. What we can say is that every cost in the table above was checked in September 2026, that we cite a source for each figure we could verify independently, and that the table reflects current price levels rather than those of a few years ago.

What costs more on Samos

Getting there and away by sea. The conventional ferry from Piraeus is a long crossing of roughly 9 to 14 hours, and a cabin on an overnight sailing adds to the fare. Faster services run less often and mostly in summer. Fares are set by each operator and change with the season, the vessel and the type of seat, so we do not publish them: compare them on the day you book. The same goes for the seasonal passenger ferry to Kusadasi, which runs daily from 1 April to 31 October. Remember that Turkey uses the Turkish lira, not the euro.

A rental car. Our table gives €25 to 35 a day for a small car in April, May and October, and €60 to 80 or more in July and August. On top of the daily rate, rental companies ask for a credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit, and it is worth checking that the insurance covers mountain and unpaved roads, since several beaches and villages are reached that way. For the west coast, the mountain villages and Mount Kerkis, a car is effectively essential, so it is often the biggest single item after accommodation.

Organised beaches and sights. On organised beaches, sunbeds and umbrellas are rented by private operators, and each sets its own price and conditions, so check whether they come free with a drink or cost extra. Wild beaches such as the Seitani coves are free but have no facilities at all. For sights, some prices are published: at the Archaeological Museum of Vathy a full-fare ticket costs €10, with a €5 reduced fare for eligible categories between 1 October and 31 May, and several free-entry days a year.

A daily budget by travel style

Budget, about €45 to 65 a day: a guesthouse or studio, meals in tavernas and local buses. It works best from Vathy or Karlovasi, where rooms and meals are cheaper than on the resort harbours, and outside July and August.

Mid-range, about €80 to 120 a day: a 3-star hotel, a mix of tavernas and nicer meals, and a few taxis. This is the typical week in Kokkari or Pythagoreio for a couple sharing a room.

How to spend less

• Travel in June or September: sea's still warm, prices are noticeably lower than July–August (see our best-time-to-visit guide).
• Base yourself in Vathy or Karlovasi rather than Kokkari or Pythagoreio if budget matters more than a beachfront address.
• Eat where locals eat: a taverna one street back from the harbour is usually cheaper and just as good as the ones with a sea view.
• Buses connect the main towns for a few euros; a rental car is only worth it if you want the west coast or the mountain villages.
