Samos Town (Vathy): Guide to the Island's Capital

Vathy is the island's capital and largest town: a working harbour on a deep, sheltered bay, an archaeological museum that justifies the stop on its own, and everyday Samian life rather than a resort strip. It is also the main ferry hub, Piraeus, Ikaria, Patmos and Chios all connect here, so most visitors pass through at least once. Give it half a day and you'll have seen what matters.

What to see and do

1. 1The Archaeological Museum: home of the Kouros of Samos, one of the largest surviving ancient Greek statues. Go here if you only do one museum on the island.
2. 2The harbour and waterfront: the busiest stretch of town, with cafés and tavernas facing the ferries. Best in the evening when the town comes out.
3. 3The upper old town: the older stone-house quarter above the port, quieter and more atmospheric than the front. Comfortable on foot if you don't mind the slope.
4. 4Ferries out: Vathy is the departure point for Piraeus (Athens) and the neighbouring islands: useful if you're island-hopping rather than flying.

7. 7Capital of the island: Vathy is the capital of the regional unit and the seat of East Samos. The bishopric, police, port authority, tax office and banks are here. It took the name Samos in 1958.
8. 8The port and the Turkish coast: Vathy takes the big Piraeus ferries; Karlovasi covers the north-west and Pythagoreio the Dodecanese. The shortest published crossing from Kuşadası is 30 minutes, and daily services run from 1 April to 31 October.
9. 9Around the bay: The town rises in an amphitheatre around the bay, behind about 1 km of waterfront lined with neoclassical buildings. Agia Zoni monastery is 4.5 km north-east, and Zoodohos Pigi 7.5 km north-east.

Practical tips

Most visitors pass through Samos Town at least once, because it is the island's main ferry hub for Piraeus, Ikaria, Patmos and Chios. If your ferry leaves from here, it is worth arriving early and giving the town half a day: the archaeological museum, the harbour front and the upper old town fit comfortably into that time.

Samos International Airport is about 14–16 km from Vathy, and published driving times range from 20 to 30 minutes. The KTEL bus stop is in front of the terminal, and you buy your ticket from the driver. The published frequency to Vathy is about every 4 hours, Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service. From Vathy, the EO 62 coastal road runs west to Kokkari and Karlovasi. It is the best-maintained artery on the island: the legal limit is 90 km/h, but real speeds are 50–70 km/h. Published distances from Vathy are 14 km to Pythagoreio, about 30–32 km to Karlovasi and 43 km to Marathokampos. The lower town by the port was Kato Vathy. The name Vathy now refers to the upper quarter, Ano Vathy, at 76 m above sea level, so walks away from the waterfront go uphill. The mountain villages, Manolates, Vourliotes and those on the slopes of the Kerkis, are not served by KTEL buses. You need a car to reach them.
