Short answer
For most first visits and couples, Kokkari is the easiest base on Samos. Choose Pythagoreio for short stays near the airport, Vathy or Karlovasi for budget and local life, and Marathokampos and Votsalakia for beach and hiking with a car. Samos has no real nightlife scene, and the west coast needs a vehicle.

How can you choose in three questions?
- Will you have a car? If not, stay in Pythagoreio, Kokkari or Vathy. If yes, the west coast opens up.
- Do you want to walk to dinner? Kokkari has the largest concentration of tavernas. Pythagoreio and Vathy also have compact harbour fronts.
- How long is the trip? For a short stay, the airport transfer matters, which favours Pythagoreio. For a week or more, Kokkari or Vathy work well.
What changes with the season?
July and August are the hottest, busiest and most expensive months, and Kokkari and Pythagoreio need booking well ahead. June and September combine warm sea with fewer crowds. Many smaller family-run properties, tavernas and tour operators close between November and April.

Which areas work best without a car or scooter?
Pythagoreio is about 10 minutes from the airport, so a taxi transfer is short. From there the Heraion and the Eupalinos Tunnel are a short taxi ride away. Kokkari and Vathy also have walkable centres, and organised tours cover boat days and the west-coast loop.
