Samos Airport (SMI): Arrivals, Transfers & Car Hire

Samos Airport is a small airport with one terminal, so arriving and leaving are rarely complicated. It sits about 6 minutes by road from Pythagoreio, but the beaches and villages of the west are up to about 45 minutes away, and the buses stop early. Direct international flights only run from April to November, so if you are coming in winter you will connect through Athens.

Arriving at Samos Airport

You walk or take a short bus ride from the aircraft to the terminal, as there are no jet bridges. Immigration and baggage reclaim are usually quick outside of a full charter arrival. There is one arrivals hall. The car hire desks are inside it and the taxi rank is just outside. Look for a cash machine in or near the terminal. If you booked a transfer, find the sign with your name and ignore other offers.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has applied at Greek borders since 12 October 2025 and becomes fully applicable on 10 April 2026. It covers non-EU passports, which includes British ones, but not EU or EEA citizens. On your first crossing, border staff take your fingerprints and a photo. The airport itself warns that waiting times are expected to be longer than usual at arrivals and departures, so allow for it.

Getting from the airport to your base

The airport is on the south-east coast, close to Pythagoreio and Vathy. Most of the island is within easy driving distance. The west is a different matter: Karlovasi and Marathokampos are about 40 minutes away and the buses finish early. If you are staying in the west, a car is useful from the day you land.

Taxi from Samos Airport

The taxi rank is right in front of the terminal. The airport does not publish any taxi fares. Taxis run on the meter, on the out-of-town tariff, with an airport supplement added. Check that the meter is running when you set off, or agree the price with the driver before you load your bags.

As a rough guide, a local guide published these fares in 2025: about 10 € to Pythagoreio, about 30 € to Vathy, and about 45 € to Karlovasi or Marathokampos. These are indicative figures from a third party, not an official tariff. They may have changed since, and the meter decides what you pay.

• Where the rank is: Outside the arrivals hall, in front of the terminal. You do not need to book to use the rank.
• Meter, not a fixed price: Outside town the meter runs on tariff 2, plus an airport supplement. Ask for the meter or agree a price first.
• If you arrive late: After the last bus, and without a hire car, your options are a taxi or a private transfer. Transfers can be booked online in advance; some hotels offer one at extra cost.

Bus from Samos Airport (KTEL)

The KTEL bus stops in front of the terminal. You buy your ticket from the driver. The main line runs to Vathy (Samos town) via Pythagoreio. Buses from the airport also serve Ireon, Mytilinioi, Pagondas and Chora, so check which line you need before you board.

The last timetable published in readable form dates from 2023. It showed the last departure from the airport to Vathy at 17:20 on weekdays and 16:15 on Saturdays, with no Sunday column at all. The summer 2026 programme is only published as an image. From 1 September 2026 the Potokaki stop is removed. Check the current times with KTEL Samos before you rely on the bus.

• Where it stops: In front of the terminal. Buses go to Vathy via Pythagoreio, and to Ireon, Mytilinioi, Pagondas and Chora.
• Tickets and fares: Tickets are sold by the driver. No fares are published, so ask KTEL Samos or the driver for the current price.
• Sunday and September: The last readable timetable has no Sunday service. From 1 September 2026 the Potokaki stop is no longer served.

Car hire at Samos Airport

Only three car hire companies have a desk at the airport, all in the arrivals hall: Avis Budget, Enterprise and Hertz/Thrifty. Every other company is a local agency that delivers the car to the airport, the port or your accommodation. The brokers you see on comparison sites have no desk here, so check who actually hands over the keys.

Before you book, compare the companies that operate on the island: Car hire companies on Samos Mountain roads and the west of the island make a car useful. In July and August, book before you leave.

Is Samos Airport dangerous to land at?

The reputation comes from three things: a runway of about 2,050 m, one of the shorter at a commercial airport in Europe, high ground close by, and the northerly Meltemi wind in summer. Pilots describe a turn of about 135 degrees along the mountain, a visual or circling approach and a late touchdown towards the sea. Terrain rises to 3,800 ft within 5 nautical miles to the north-west.

The record is clear. There has been one fatal accident, on 3 August 1989, when an Olympic Aviation flight crashed and 34 people died. No other aircraft has been lost at Samos. The airport has no precision approach, only VOR/NDB procedures, so crews follow more demanding procedures than at a large airport. That is a matter of training and planning, not of risk to passengers.

The 'dangerous airport' label is mostly a myth. Popular German rankings of the most dangerous airports do not list Samos; they pick Corfu or Skiathos. Neither Fraport Greece nor the Greek civil aviation authority has commented on the label. In short, the approach is demanding for pilots, but the safety record is not poor. As a passenger, you have nothing special to do.

Departing from Samos Airport

The airport does not recommend a check-in time and refers you to your airline. As a guide, Jet2, which flies to Samos, opens check-in 2 h 30 before departure, closes it 40 minutes before, and closes bag drop 40 minutes before. It advises arriving 2 hours ahead. There is one security checkpoint with three lanes.

The terminal closes at 21:00 and opens at 05:30 or 06:00 depending on the date. It is not a place to wait overnight for an early flight. Duty-free allowances follow EU rules, and the airport lists them. If you carry 10,000 € or more in cash, you must declare it.

• How early: Follow your airline. Jet2 advises 2 hours before departure, with check-in and bag drop closing 40 minutes before.
• Terminal hours: 06:00 to 21:00, or 05:30 to 21:00 from 2 June to 14 August 2026. The terminal is closed at night.
• Security, duty free and cash: One checkpoint, three lanes. EU limits include 800 cigarettes and 10 L of spirits, not for under-17s. Declare cash from 10,000 €.

Terminal services and facilities

• Free Wi-Fi: Connect to the 'Fraport-Free' network anywhere in the terminal.
• Phone charging: Free wireless and USB charging points in the check-in hall and in departures after security.
• Trolleys and parking: Trolleys are free: you get your deposit coin back when you return one. Parking in front of the terminal is free but limited, and often full in August.
• Lost property: Items lost in the terminal go to the police. Items left on board and delayed bags are handled by your airline.
• Assisted travel: Request assistance for reduced mobility through your airline at least 48 hours before you fly.
• Food, shops and first aid: Easy grab n' go, Everest and Bonheur for food and drinks, a duty-free shop, and first aid on site.

Flights to Samos: routes and season

International traffic at Samos is strictly seasonal. Flights run from April to November, and there were no international passengers from December to March. In total, 21 airlines fly to the island. In 2025 the Netherlands was the largest foreign market with 79,404 passengers, Germany second with 47,448, and the UK a modest market with 7,068.

Published flight times are about 3 hours from Frankfurt, 3 h 10 from Düsseldorf and 3 h 55 from London. Outside the direct season, fly via Athens. The domestic flight takes about 55 minutes and runs all year, but you need to allow time for the connection in Athens.
