How to choose your excursion in Samos

Most Samos excursions fall into three families: a day on a boat along the coast, a guided loop of the island by bus, and a short wine tasting. The right one depends less on the rating than on four practical questions.

  • How long you want to be out. The boat days and the island bus tour listed here last 6 to 8 hours, so they fill a whole day. The wine tastings last about an hour and fit around a beach day or a drive.
  • Where it starts from. Most shared tours pick you up at coastal hotels, while the private charter leaves from Pythagoreio harbour and the organic winery tasting takes place near Karlovasi. Check the pickup zone against your base before you book: the west coast is 45 to 60 minutes from Pythagoreio by road, see getting to and around Samos.
  • Shared boat or private charter. A shared cruise is priced per person and runs a fixed route. The private charter is priced for the group (up to 6 people), so it only works out if you fill the boat, but you choose the coves and the timing.

  • Booking a tour that starts on the other side of the island. A pickup that is easy from Pythagoreio can mean a long early drive from Marathokampos or Karlovasi.
  • Trusting a perfect score on a handful of reviews. A 5.0 on 3 reviews says less than 4.7 on 88; that is why we explain how we rank Samos tours.
  • Planning a boat day on your last day. Boat trips depend on the weather and the sea, so keep a spare day in case the operator reschedules.
  • Paying for a private charter for two. At a group price it pays off with a full boat; for a couple, a shared cruise usually makes more sense.
