Samos Pythagorion: Pythagoreio Harbour Town Guide

A small, whitewashed harbour town on Samos' south-east coast, named after its most famous son: Pythagoras, born here around 570 BC. Alongside the nearby Heraion, Pythagoreio's ancient port, fortifications and the remarkable Eupalinos Tunnel earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1992. Half a day covers the town itself: longer if you add the tunnel and temple nearby. The town was called Tigani until 1955, when it was renamed in honour of Pythagoras.

9. 9Getting here: Pythagoreio is about 14–15 km from Vathy, roughly 20 minutes by road. The road between the airport, Pythagoreio and Vathy is well maintained and signposted. Marathokampos is 35 km away, about 1 h via Psili Ammos.

Planning your visit

Pythagoreio works as a half-day visit on its own, or a full day if you add the Eupalinos Tunnel and the Heraion nearby. The harbour is also where boat trips to Kasonisi islet start, so the town pairs naturally with a day at sea. It is compact, and its waterfront is the natural place to start and finish a walk.

The UNESCO listing, "Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos", dates from 1992 and was made under criteria (ii) and (iii). It covers two places: the ancient city of Pythagoreion and the sanctuary of Hera. The Eupalinos Tunnel lies about 2 km from the port. The Heraion is about 6 km from the port; by road, it is 7.5 km from Pythagorio and about 1 km from the hamlet of Ireon.

The town sits at an elevation of 9 m, and the airport is about 3 km away. In 1994 a UNESCO conservation report already flagged the site as threatened by tourist expansion and by vibrations from the nearby airport. For your own visit, arrive early and keep the town for one half-day. The tunnel and the Heraion can fill a second half-day. If you continue west, the south coast road leads to Marathokampos and Votsalakia.
