Samos Bird Species: A Guide for Birdwatchers

Samos isn't marketed as a birdwatching destination the way some Greek wetlands are, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about if you're already interested. The island's habitat range, from Mount Kerkis' upland forest to coastal wetlands near Vathy, supports resident and migratory birds in the same small area.

Mount Kerkis and the forested interior are the place to look for raptors, commonly buzzards and kestrels, along with woodland species in the pine and oak forest around Manolates and the higher trails.

Coastal wetlands and river mouths, particularly around Vathy and the island's few freshwater streams, attract herons, egrets and a range of migratory waders and waterfowl, especially in spring and autumn passage periods.

Coastal cliffs and rocky shoreline are worth scanning for gulls and, with patience, shearwaters and other seabirds offshore, particularly around the quieter west coast near Votsalakia.

Best time to visit for birdwatching: spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) migration periods generally offer the most variety, since Samos' position close to the Turkish mainland puts it on a natural crossing point for birds moving between Europe and Africa.

Practical tips: bring binoculars, since Samos has no dedicated birdwatching hides or visitor centre; this is independent, self-guided birdwatching using the island's varied terrain rather than an organised circuit. Early morning is the most active time, as on most islands.
