Most Samos beaches are pebble. Psili Ammos, near the airport, is the island's clearest exception. Its name literally means 'fine sand' in Greek, and it's the reason many families base themselves on the south-east coast.
The beach itself is a sandy bay with shallow, gently sloping water, making it noticeably easier for small children than the pebble beaches around Kokkari. The water is calm most days, sheltered from the open sea.
